INSTALL GUIDES: Walls Insulation

Wall Insulation Techniques: Improve Home Energy Efficiency

Wall insulation is a critical component in building construction and renovation. It helps to improve energy efficiency, maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, reduce energy costs, and decrease environmental impact. Wall insulation is a material or combination of materials used within the walls of buildings to reduce heat transfer, enhance energy efficiency, and maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. It acts as a barrier to heat flow, keeping warm air inside during the winter and preventing heat from entering during the summer.

Use: SmartSHIELD 10MM, SmartSHIELD 5MM, SmartSHIELD 1/4 Inch, SmartSHIELD 20MMor the Single Bubble Reflective Insulation, Double Bubble Reflective Insulation

Equipment checklist: Reflective tapedouble sided tape, utility knife and staples or screws - Refer to application.

SmartSHIELD Reflective Insulation type will reduce the amount of energy required to heat and cool your home. This will allow you to run your heating and cooling systems less making them last longer. It will also potentially reduce the HVAC equipment size required thereby saving more money.

How To Insulate Walls

SmartSHIELD (New Install) Over Stud:

  1. Staple or screw to affix insulation to wall before installing your studs.
  2. To improve performance, push insulation in to create air-gap (2+ inches).
  3. Tape seams with reflective tape.
  4. Attach your drywall (optional)

One Layer Under Stud:

  1. Screw or screw insulation to underside of purlins.

SmartSHIELD (New Install) Over Stud

Two Layers Over/Under Stud:

  1. Staple or screw to affix insulation to wall before installing your studs.
  2. To improve performance, push insulation in to create air-gap (2+ inches).
  3. Tape seams with reflective tape.
  4. Roll insulation perpendicular to and over studs.
  5. Tape seams with reflective tape.
  6. Screw or staple insulation to underside of purlins.

Two Layers - One Layer Between and One Layer Under Studs:

  1. Depending on your stud spacing, staple one layer of SmartSHIELD insulation between studs.
  2. Staple or screw larger roll (SmartSHIELD 10MM or SmartSHIELD 20MM) under stud.

One Layer Under Stud plus Drywall:

  1. Staple or screw insulation to underside of studs.
  2. Push insulation into cavity to create 2+ inch air-gap.
  3. Attach drywall.

Two Layers Between/Under Stud with Furring and Drywall:

  1. Depending on your stud spacing, staple or screw one layer of SmartSHIELD insulation between studs.
  2. Staple or screw larger roll (SmartSHIELD 10MM or SmartSHIELD 20MM) under stud.
  3. Attach 1 inch lathe board (furring strip) through underside of insulation.
  4. Attach drywall.

One Layer Between Studs:

  1. Depending on your stud spacing, staple or screw one layer of SmartSHIELD insulation between studs.
