A radon barrier is a crucial component in reducing radon levels in buildings, particularly in areas where radon gas infiltration from the ground is a concern. Radon is a radioactive gas that is naturally occurring and can pose serious health risks, including lung cancer, when it accumulates indoors at high levels. Implementing a radon barrier helps to prevent radon gas from entering the building.
Combining radon barriers with insulation is a strategic approach to ensure both energy efficiency and protection against radon gas infiltration. This dual-purpose installation is particularly useful in basements and crawl spaces where radon entry is a concern.
Use: SmartSHIELD 5MM White Film or Reflective White SmartBUBBLE
1. Very efficient in areas having radon gas problems
2. Cheaper than a lead barrier
3. Also a perfect vapor barrier
4. Thermal resistance added
How To Insulate With A Radon Barrier to Protect your Home from Harmful Gases

Floor:
- Do the same installation as underneath the concrete slab (see Radiant Heat in a Concrete Floor). Just make sure to seal it along the wall.
Exterior Wall:
- Install SmartSHIELD 5MM White Film or Reflective White SmartBUBBLE, white side against the wall, with a multi purpose adhesive. Seal the seams with under concrete tape. Be sure to properly seal with caulking at the bottom and at ground level on the foundation wall.
Benefits of Radon Barrier Insulation
1. Radon Protection: Prevents radon gas from entering the building, reducing health risks.
2. Energy Efficiency: Enhances the thermal performance of the building by reducing heat loss or gain.
3. Moisture Control: Helps to control moisture, preventing mold and mildew growth.
4. Improved Indoor Air Quality: By blocking radon and improving insulation, indoor air quality is significantly enhanced.
