What’s a radiant barrier house wrap?

A radiant barrier house wrap works as a reflective shield around exterior walls of buildings. It consists of highly reflective aluminum foil layers that can prevent radiant heat from going through. Besides blocking air and moisture like conventional wraps can do, radiant barrier wraps can add thermal protection as well by reflecting heat.

Traditional house wraps can protect against water and allow moisture vapor to escape. Meanwhile, radiant barrier house wraps can do even more, combining these protective qualities with heat management. The reflective surface bounces away up to 95% of radiant heat to keep your home cooler during the summer. Meanwhile, in winter, it reflects indoor heat back into your living space to make it warmer. This dual functionality leads to better temperature control throughout the year.

Plus, radiant barriers resist moisture without trapping it to maintain their effectiveness over time. You would notice improved indoor comfort while saving costs for heating and cooling.

How does the radiant barrier house wrap work?

Radiant barrier house wrap works based on a fundamental principle of heat transfer in which radiant energy reflects off shiny surfaces. The aluminum foil surface of the wrap becomes a reflective barrier against thermal radiation.

Sunlight hits home exteriors with radiant heat, moving through your walls and warming indoor spaces if there is no protection. A radiant barrier house wrap helps reflect most of this heat away before it penetrates the walls as the aluminum surface bounces back about 95% of incoming radiant heat.

The effectiveness of the SmartFOIL radiant barrier wrap comes from its low emissivity value. It acts as a mirror for heat, with the foil surface reflecting thermal radiation. This feature stops heat transfer at the first point of contact. It is much better than just slowing down the process like standard insulation often does.

Moreover, the perforations on radiant barriers allow water vapor to escape while still blocking heat. This feature helps prevent moisture from building up inside walls. At the same time, indoor heat can reflect back during cold months to keep the thermal protection efficient all year.

Why choose a perforated radiant barrier?

Perforated radiant barriers can protect your home through its smart ventilation design. The tiny holes across the product allow water vapor to escape, preventing trapped moisture, mold, or structural damage.

This breathability proves especially valuable in exterior walls. Indoor activities, like cooking, showering, and breathing, often generate moisture, then the vapor needs an exit path. The perforations in the barrier create escape routes. Meanwhile, it still maintains strong heat reflection properties.

The SmartFOIL radiant barrier is designed with balanced size and spacing of these holes. They're large enough to let water vapor pass through yet small enough to preserve its heat-reflecting capability. This design prevents condensation buildup inside walls or attic spaces.

In addition, this breathable nature of perforated barriers adapts well to seasonal changes. They work effectively in both humid summers and cold winters. Your walls will stay dry, and your home will remain protected against both moisture damage and heat transfer.

How does it improve energy efficiency?

Radiant barrier house wrap improves home energy performance through advanced heat management. The reflective surface blocks summer heat from entering your walls, so your air conditioning system works less to maintain cool temperatures.

Therefore, this heat-blocking power translates directly into energy savings. Standard walls absorb up to 90% of radiant heat, forcing cooling systems to run longer. A radiant barrier reflects most of this heat to lower electricity bills and support your HVAC equipment.

Besides the summer months, the barrier reflects indoor heat back toward living spaces to not let it escape through walls during winter. As a result, your heating system can maintain desired temperatures more easily, and you can achieve consistent energy savings throughout the year.

The exact savings depend on specific climate, home design, and existing insulation. Moreover, homes in hot climates particularly benefit as the barrier blocks intense solar radiation during peak seasons.

SmartFOIL combines premium aluminum foil layers with advanced engineering for superior heat reflection. The multiple reflective surfaces block 95% of radiant heat transfer. Each layer undergoes precise perforation, creating a calculated pattern of microscopic holes throughout the material.

This design allows proper airflow while maintaining excellent moisture control properties. The construction also delivers lasting performance under varied weather conditions, making it suitable for both residential and commercial applications.

SmartFOIL radiant barrier house wrap performs exceptionally in attics, walls, and crawl spaces of residential homes. The material adapts well to metal buildings, barns, and agricultural structures.

Its flexible design allows smooth application over various surface types, including wood framing, metal studs, and concrete walls. Also, the barrier works effectively in both new construction projects and existing building renovations.

  • Measurements: 500 square feet roll, measuring 4 feet wide by 125 feet long.
  • A 95% radiant heat reflection rate through its engineered aluminum surface.
  • R-18 equivalent performance when properly installed.
  • The industrial-grade construction maintains flexibility for easy handling.

Will put under every roof I replace again!

Used this under our metal roof for our chicken coop/ shed. I can not rave enough about how cool the chicken coop has become after using it. The coop has no electric and I didn’t have to open the windows at all. The coop sitting in the sun at 90 degrees is comparable to sitting in the shade in the woods in the middle of summer. We don’t have crazy heat in Southwest PA but it does get in the high 90s sometimes in direct sunlight.I will put this under any metal roofs I ever replace. So worth it!!!

Excellent material

Super strong , perforated , cuts easily, great value.... Get this with no worries , super easy to cut to size and install, and wow what a difference in the heat transfer!

works, cheaper, easy to use, strong

Yes get this brand. Cheap, the double bubble type is worthless, this is super strong, very easy to handle. Radiant barrier was installed under rafter (below foamboard), and above the floor joists, over the 3.5" pink fiberglass stuff. Along with 4 solar attic fans, we are probably only a few degrees above the outside temperature. 100 degree attic is way better than 140° attic. Super easy. do it.

Tough stuff for the money

Good quality and thick material. Staples without tearing and seems pretty tough.

FAQ

Radiant barrier foil reflects at least 95% of radiant heat, while standard insulation mainly slows conductive heat transfer.

Yes. Radiant barriers help retain indoor heat during winter as the foil reflects heat back into living spaces.

Homeowners typically see 10-25% savings on cooling costs and even more for summer savings.

Yes. The perforated design allows water vapor to escape while blocking liquid water and reflecting heat, which helps prevent moisture buildup in walls.
