What is XPE Foam?
XPE stands for Cross-linked Polyethylene. XPE foam is made through a chemical cross-linking process to create a strong bond between polymer chains. The result is a closed-cell foam, a lightweight yet durable material.
This closed-cell structure features millions of tiny air pockets that create an excellent barrier to block heat transfer and sound waves. That’s why XPE foam has become the most effective insulation material for thermal and acoustic applications. It can remain stable across a wide temperature range and moisture absorption.
XPE foam stands out for being flexible and strong. The cross-linked molecular structure helps it resist high compression. Meanwhile, the lightweight makes it easy to handle. The non-toxic nature is a plus for XPE foam in many applications, including construction insulation and automotive components.
The adhesive backing of the SmartSHIELD XPE foam makes it easy to apply on various surfaces. Over time, it can still keep its shape and structure.
How does the XPE foam provide insulation and energy efficiency?
The microscopic air bubbles of the tiny air pockets act as natural insulators, an effective thermal barrier. It can prevent the movement of heat between indoors and outdoors. The foam cellular composition stops heat from passing through walls, floors, and ceilings.
As a result, XPE foam helps buildings maintain stable indoor temperatures throughout the year. In summer, the foam can keep hot air outside and retain cool air inside. Vice versa, in winter, it prevents warm air from escaping your building and cold air from entering your space. This insulation method helps properties lower heating and cooling costs.
The thermal resistance of foam material makes it an outstanding insulator. This ability is measured by its high R-value. When properly installed, XPE foam becomes a continuous barrier to stop unwanted heat transfer through building materials. With further usage of an HVAC system, this insulation solution will keep your energy bills much lower.
Key Benefits of SmartSHIELD Plus 3mm XPE Foam
SmartSHIELD Plus 3mm XPE foam is the ultimate solution to keep your homes comfortable by preventing heat transfer through walls and floors. This superior thermal insulation helps maintain ideal indoor temperatures throughout the year. It helps reduce significant energy bills at an affordable installation cost.
Beyond the heat, the foam is water-resistant, preventing damage caused by moisture. When water cannot penetrate the material, surfaces underneath from mold, mildew, and rot, can be protected. Even after long exposure to moisture, the foam can maintain its shape and performance.
SmartSHIELD XPE foam also has a great soundproofing capability, making it ideal for reducing noise between rooms and floors. The foam naturally absorbs sound waves and reduces impact noise. As a result, the material will help keep your indoor spaces quieter rooms.
Finally, the durable construction of the foam helps it resist compression, tearing, and breakdown over time. It is lightweight to make it easy to install. In addition, it stays flexible not to crack or degrade easily.
How XPE foam differs from traditional insulation
XPE foam stands out from traditional fiberglass insulation due to its superior moisture resistance. While fiberglass can absorb water and lose effectiveness over time, XPE foam maintains its shape and performance even in damp conditions. Its closed-cell structure blocks moisture while keeping the material lightweight and flexible.
It is also easier to install than spray foam or fiberglass. Available in convenient rolls or sheets, XPE foam can be cut to size with basic tools without requiring special protective gear or professional help. In contrast, spray foam often requires trained technicians for proper application. Unlike fiberglass, XPE foam does not release itchy fibers or airborne particles, making it a cleaner and more user-friendly option.
XPE foam outperforms other insulation materials in terms of durability. While fiberglass can develop gaps over time, XPE foam maintains its shape and insulating properties for decades. It remains unaffected by normal temperature fluctuations and building movement. Compared to cellulose, which tends to compact over time, XPE foam holds its structure without requiring much maintenance.

Used this for padding my interior to reduce vibration… works great..
I used this product to cover the wheel wells of our Promaster van and some of the lower half of the walls. It was very easy to work with and adheres really well.I did find that towards the center of the roll the material had big creases in it that missed getting any adhesive material applied to them, so that was a little disappointing, but easy enough to work around, just lost some product. This stuff isn't a dense rubber like I thought it would be, just a sturdy foam, so while it definitely helps with noise dampening, it's not quite the highest quality you can get.
I am in the process to convert my Nissan NV200 into a micro camper, and the first step is sound proofing. I started with three different rolls of different sound deadening material and this one came out in second place.Why?- it is quite lightweight (like my others were)... if you want weighted soundproofing material, it will cost you much more. This is an economical solution....- it does have paper as backing material, which I was supposed to pull off to expose the adhesive side. Paper is good, as it doesn't easily break during it being pulled off. I had other soundproofing material with thin see-through plastic that drove me crazy during me trying to peel it off.... took way too much time. So this is the reason this material comes in second.- and as far as ADHESION goes: not very happy with it! As you can see in my photos, as long as the material was laid out flat and straight, the adhesion was no problem. When I came the next day to my car, the pieces that were on a curved spot came un-done! Since I continued on my project, I pressed those pieces back into place and then applied my insulation, and then my walls, so this adhesion issue wasn't a biggie.... but just goes to prove, adhesion isn't 100% great!Since doing this soundproofing work, I was able to drive around with my micro camper some, and it IS quieter in back, but it is hard to tell what helped to keep the sound down because the soundproofing was just part of thickening my walls..... however, if you look at van builds, everyone does soundproofing, and so did I.I wish there were a line guide printed on the paper backing so I could have cut my pieces in straight lines.Overall, I give this 4 stars for good padding, an easy peel-off solution (brown paper) but marginal adhesion.
FAQ
XPE foam contains no toxins, latex, or allergens. The dense, thick material cleans easily and repels water, making it ideal for baby play mats.
The automotive industry uses XPE foam in high-friction areas due to its heat resistance and insulation. The rigid structure works well in expansion joints and industrial gaskets.
